Credentialed Community Language (CCL) Test
Since January 2018, in order to ensure the fairness of examinations and to uphold the industry standards, the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (known as NAATI) has made it a rule that students who wish to obtain 5 ‘bonus’ points for their community language in immigration applications and/or want to be a translator or interpreter need to sit for the external standardised examination(s) organised by the NAATI office.
At the start of 2018, NAATI introduced a new test, the CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test, in addition to the three traditional tests of Certified Translator test, Certified Interpreter test and Certified Provisional Interpreter test. In the CCL test, a recording is played to the candidate and the candidate’s responses are recorded for marking. The test materials include two dialogues of approximately 300 words each between an English speaker and the Language Other Than English (LOTE) speaker. The candidate interprets segment by segment alternatively into English and LOTE. The test examines the candidate’s accuracy, fluency, vocabulary, grammar and other elements. The topics in the CCL test may include education, welfare, business, law and health. Candidates do not need to sit for Intercultural and Ethical Competency tests, neither do they need to satisfy such prerequisites as English language proficiency (IELTS, PTE or OET) and written assignments.
