Certified Provisional Interpreter Test

Since January 2018, in order to ensure the fairness of examinations and to uphold the industry standards, the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (known as NAATI) has made it a rule that students who wish to obtain 5 ‘bonus’ points for their community language in immigration applications and/or want to be a translator or interpreter need to sit for the external standardised examination(s) organised by the NAATI office.

As shown on the NAATI website, the Certified Provisional Interpreter test involves three tasks:

  • Task Type A: Two consecutive interpreting tasks in face-to-face dialogue mode
  • Task Type B: One consecutive interpreting task in remote dialogue mode via telephone

Each task is conducted in the form of a live role-play consisting of one English-speaking and one LOTE-speaking role-player. Each task lasts for 10 to 12 minutes and centres around a different topic. The candidate is required to interpret for both of the role-players alternatively during each task.
