Certified Translator Test
Since January 2018, in order to ensure the fairness of examinations and to uphold the industry standards, the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (known as NAATI) has made it a rule that students who wish to obtain 5 ‘bonus’ points for their community language in immigration applications and/or want to be a translator or interpreter need to sit for the external standardised examination(s) organised by the NAATI office.
The Certified Translator test not only focuses on each candidate’s English and Chinese language abilities and translation skills, but also examines the candidate’s scope and depth of understanding about Australian society, such as its legal, medical and welfare systems. Hence, it comprehensively assesses the candidate’s knowledge and skills.
As shown on the NAATI website, the Certified Translator test involves three tasks within 3.5 hours:
- Task Type A: Two translation tasks centring around different topics from a choice of three
- Task Type B: One revision task of a non-specialised translation
Each translation task will assess the candidate’s translation skills and knowledge on a specific topic.
